Sports

The most popular sport in Japan is baseball.  Sumo wrestling is the national sport of Japan. Martial Arts is something that many of the 
Japanese enjoy! They also enjoy football, ice skating, golf, racing, and also auto racing. Baseball came from the Americans during World War II. The American Army stayed in Japan after World War II finished and introduced baseball to the Japanese and it became very popular.

Clothing

The kimono is the traditional clothing to wear for special occasions. Teenagers have their own style. They get to wear whatever they want to!

Housing

People normally live in small apartments in the city. There are normally two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining room and one living room. The bathroom has a shower. The floor is low for a deep bathtub. The toilet is in the other bathroom with a sink. House entries have a hallway with a big step up. You should always take off your shoes before entering a house.

Language

The language of Japan is called Japanese. Japanese can be written vertically from right to left or horizontally from left to right.

Bed = futon 

Money = yen  

Grandfather = ojiisan  

Grandmother = obaasan         


There are four alphabets of Japan. Kanji is the written language of Japan. Japan also has two phonetic alphabets (hiragana and katakana). A third phonetic alphabet (romaji) uses Roman letters, which are the letters we use.

Religion

Some of the religions in Japan are Shintoism and Buddhism. 89.5% of Japanese people practice both Shintoism and Buddhism. 2.1% of Japanese people are Christian. 8.3% of Japanese people have no religion or practice another religion. Shinto means way of the gods and stresses a person’s relationship to nature. Buddhism focusses on beauty in life through meditation and finding enlightenment. Simple activities such as serving tea or arranging flowers is very meaningful for someone to do for someone else or for visitors.
